AOS is the industry abbreviation for sodium C14-16 olefin sulfonate (CAS 68439-57-6), an anionic surfactant produced by sulfonating linear alpha-olefins and neutralizing the result.

Formulators choose AOS for four properties:

  • Hard-water performance — it keeps foaming and cleaning in mineral-rich water where sulfate esters lose efficiency.
  • Strong, fast foam — valued in dishwashing liquids and shampoos.
  • Hydrolysis stability — as a sulfonate (not a sulfate ester), it tolerates a wider pH range.
  • Ready biodegradability — supports eco-label and detergent-regulation compliance.
